Woman Looking Up Smiling thinking “ What is a stay-at-home mom”

The question might seem like one that doesn’t need to be answered. Like, it’s in the name right? The question IS the answer, right? Well, there’s more behind this question “what is a stay-at-home mom?”, and more to the answer than you might think…

What is the Meaning of “Stay-at-Home Mom”?

Simply put, a stay-at-home mom is a mother who, instead of working outside the home, stays home with her children.

A stay-at-home mom is someone who stays home to raise her children and manage her household.

She may have one or more children of any age, and she may or may not have left the workforce to stay home. The term is often abbreviated into the acronym “SAHM”.

What is the Difference Between a Stay-at-Home Mom and a House Wife?

A stay-at-home mom, as the name implies, has children and stays home with them. A housewife doesn’t necessarily always have kids.

Also, many stay-at-home moms make some sort of income for the family, and usually a housewife is fully supported financially by her partner.

Depending on the demographic you are speaking to, some women take offense at the term “housewife”, since the connotations of being a house wife evoke thoughts of 1950’s America, where women couldn’t vote, relied solely on their husbands for all income and had little autonomy. For these reasons and many others the term “housewife” leaves a bad taste in some people’s mouths.

Others feel a sense of nostalgia with the word “housewife” and even prefer to be called a housewife since they feel it harkens back to simpler times where men and women’s roles were more clearly defined and the division of labor in the household was more cut and dry. These women often take pride in being home makers, in being financially dependent on their husbands, and see these as a more natural order of things.

How do Stay at Home Moms Get Paid?

For all but the rarest of cases, a stay-at-home mom will need to have some sort of work-from-home job or gig work in order to create income and “get paid”.

Some possible ways that stay-at-home moms can make money are:

  • Selling or reselling items online or in person, such as clothing, furniture, books, or crafts
  • Finding freelance or contract jobs on online platforms, such as Upwork, that match their skills and interests
  • Starting a blog, an online course, or a YouTube channel on a topic they are passionate or knowledgeable about, and earning money from advertising, subscriptions, or sponsorships
  • Applying for government benefits or tax credits, such as the child tax credit, that may be available for low-income or eligible families
  • Receiving financial support or compensation from their spouse or partner, family members, or friends

These are just some examples of how stay-at-home moms can get paid, but there may be other options depending on their situation. The amount of money they can make can vary wildly depending type of work they take on, the hours they put in, and the amount of success they have with landing or creating profitable job.

Another possible answer to the question:

Stay at home moms receive many mercies and compensations for their tireless efforts to care for their families.

From deeper bonds with their children to praise from their spouse to pride in their work and more.
